I wouldn't advise that. It's better to avoid compression while you're
editing, if you want a high-quality end result. Keep it in DV format until
you convert to DVD. Yes, the AVI file will be large, but the quality *will*
be better.

I had a problem recently where a video filter installed by another program
was interfering with Windows MovieMaker, so check that the problem isn't
anything like that.

As someone else suggested, the preview quality you get in your editing
program will be much lower than the final result when you save to DV-AVI, so
don't be disturbed by that. Try saving a small portion back to DV-AVI and
see what the result looks like.
