Lame has been developed as an open source project with contributions from
many people. The 3.90.3 version was the latest stage of development in 2001.
It has been heavily tested and optimised. The 3.95.1 version was developed
by a new group of coders. Their latest version is 3.97.beta.2. A version
compiled for the Mac is available from
http://www.rarewares.org/mp3.html
Avoid the alpha versions.

I'd be grateful for feedback that this procedure works

For me what is important is that I can get 320 kbps quality at 192 kbps
(VBR). I'm not really concerned about the encode time or the interface.

FhG MP3enc 3.1 is very good but only CBR. FhG l3enc is very slow, fair
quality and FhG fastenc is crap quality IMHO.

But FYI I believe that the Itunes mp3 encoder is a development of the
ISO based Soundjam encoder.
