According to this site, the recorder has a component vid input. I
suggest you use that input if your source is a HD tuner or box. If
the hard drive recorder isn't HD, then the recorder should downconvert
the input signal down to SD (480i).

If you use an S-Vid or composite input, then the HD tuner or box will
downconvert to SD.

The unit also has a firewire input, so if you can get a HD cable box
with a firewire out, you could use that input. I understand there is
an FCC requirement that cable companies provide such boxes upon
request.

You should still hook up the component out to the TV for the best
picture regardless of the input source. It certainly will give you
the best picture for widescreen amaphoric DVDs.
