The 170 is a better camera in every respect excepting the one major
consideration, the XL2 has better 16x9, which for me is a vital issue.
Fortunately both cameras are obsolete and I'll never have to make that
choice, nor should you quite frankly, Unless you are staying in the
amateur domain and only have money for a second hand unit, I can't
imagine why you persist in this non secitur research?

It's a bit like Generals (Air Marshals on this side of the pond) trying
to decide which sort of World War One bi-plane to equip the Air force
with.

We moving rapidly into an HD 16x9 world, seek out one of the HDV options
is my advice.
