I called Wacom today. The technician said the fix is a pair of
needle-nose pliers. Gently pull the tip straight out and clean it with
your fingers. (I found a minimal amount of dirt where the tip merged with
the pen body.) Any dirt will screw up the pressure switch, and reducing
the sensitivity "will make it worse"(?). After reinsertion I reset to
factory default, with no problem so far. If that hadn't solved the
problem he opined that the pen was broken, and they'd be happy to sell me
a new one. He also said the service life of a pen was "about 4 years".
Since I have a Pen Partner going on 10 years that still works that must be
a conservative estimate.
