I can't tune in the video channel properly on either a VCR or a DVD recorder
(both Panasonics, though I don't think that's relevant). I get a very good
picture on all television channels tuned directly on the TV. I get a pretty
good picture on the television stations tuned through the EXT channel of
both VCR and DVD recorder (though there's a visible pattern of diagonal
lines here). But on the video channel, the image has light and dark narrow
bands through it, so that the picture is almost impossible to make out.

The really strange thing about all this is that until this morning I _was_
able to tune the VCR.

I bought the DVD recorder about 2 months ago. I couldn't tune the video
channel, so I just reconnected the VCR, intending to find out what was wrong
with the DVD later on. However, they've recently built something which
slightly obstructs the line of sight between the transmitter and my aerial,
so I decided to buy a digital terrestrial receiver. My picture improved at
once, even before I tuned it, so I postponed doing this. Since I was getting
a good picture on the VCR video channel, it didn't occur to me there could
be any problem with it. It was when I tried playing a videotape that up came
all the bands. As I wanted to see the videotape properly, I disconnected the
digital receiver. But I haven't been able to get my original setup back. The
video channel is now all distorted by the bands whether there's a tape
playing or not.

What on earth could be the cause of this, and what can I do about it?

Thanks for any replies.

Tim

suggestions for a more technical forum gratefully received.)
