Actually this is the best question I've read in this thread.

If the US can quickly develop and change over into ethanol/electric hybrids
that plugin to the grid, our need for oil would be drastically cut.

India and China are the two big up and comers.

In ten years we are supposed to start feeling the effects of global warming.
If this is still science fiction for you, there's not much that can be said
to you. But once these effects are felt, China and India are going to see
the need to find an alternative. More pressure will be put on them than has
been put on the US, because the effects will cause greater urgency
internationally.

So, if the US takes the lead in developing this technology, the world will
once again resent us for their indebtedness to us.

But global warming is the biggie that is going to make the difference. Far
more than prices.
