I thought that way as well. With only CAV the speed (from the laser
point of view) on the outer part of the disc must be very high. And I
guess that is why there are more PIE errors (the "pits" that are
burned must have "not-to-sharp" edges as well I guess. With 12x or 8x
P-CAV the rotation speed is slowed when data speed reaches 12x or 8x,
and then the quality of the "burn" shold be equal for the rest of the
disk (using 16x CAV the quality is also OK up to about 14x data rate,
so with 12x P-CAV you still have som margin up to that point).

But this is also speculations :-)

BUT the one test that check the quality of the "pits" and "lands" did
show that 16x and 12x gave a "good" disk and 8x gave a "very good" :-)
