I have an ancient RIO, an obsolete Lexar, a cheap Irock, and a cheap Emprex
that requires an sd-card http://tinyurl.com/krdom Except for the irock,
they all play wma files but I've never tried them with vbr. I have always
used them in outdoor/exercise activities where there is risk of
losing/dropping/breaking so I don't want much invested. As for what to
recommend, it depends on your needs such as memory capacity and utility of
the display. The irock doesn't even have a display!
