Your friend is wrong.
WMA, like MP3, is what's called a "lossy" format. "Lossy" means that
whenever you convert something into it, you lose sound quality. Whether
or not you will hear the difference depends on how sensitive your
hearing is.
If you decide to convert your MP3 collection to WMA, I suggest you first
make a backup (of your favourite songs at least).
