Thanks Gino.

Your response is indeed logical, but the recording facility on the
machine is simply a case of selecting the programme fro the Freeview
EPG and selecting Timer. You don't actually need to input dates or
times at all. It is fantastically simple. I expect it must be a bug,
but I've found anything at the Sony website to help :-(
