I always had a good bit of luck through newsgroups and mailing lists. You
figure, other people who like the same bands, or genres if you find those
lists, all listen to different bands. And since you have the one in common,
you're likely to share similar tastes. I'd get all sorts of
recommendations, and most of the time, they paid off. And, thanks to p2p's,
you can usually try them out before you buy, saving your funds for the
suggestions that actually pan out.
I'd suggest, however, that if you go this route, you stick to your more
obscure bands or less radio-friendly genres, or you risk getting suggestions
from radio slaves.
