OK, there are many variants of the Xvid codec - many of which don`t work
entirely properly (they were based on an early "release" of the MPEG4
codec from Microsoft IIRC)

It was open source, so several groups released their own variant, but
with them all being called xvid...

For the definitive info and codecs, i`d be tempted to mooch around
