If this is true, I'd say it's simply a matter of Lucas punishing those
who prefer the unaltered versions to his newer ones. He can say he gave
in to demands and put them out, but poor sales will enable him to later
claim that he'll never do so again, since clearly nobody wants them.
I highly doubt he'll ever put them out on blu-ray or HD. This release
will be it, I think; if he despises the OOTs so much that he won't even
bother using the industry standard that EVERY widescreen movie gets
these days (even cruddy ones that nobody wants), why would he transfer
them to higher technology?
This is a deliberate move to sabotage the release, it seems to me. I
can't think of any other reason for him put out a product that's going
to look worse than even the cheapest, least popular widescreen movie out
there.
On the other hand, this should cheer the bootlegggers up considerably!
They'll now be able to continue making money from Lucas' work for years
to come, since their transfers are anamorphic. They care more about
giving the fans quality copies than Lucas does, it would appear...
Maybe I'm being too hard on the guy, but this move baffles me...if
anybody can give a good reason for Lucas to do this other than pure
pettiness, I'm open to hearin' it!
