I've had a Marantz II, two different Harmonys (665 & 885 still in use) and a
Pronto (still in use).

The only one that works 100% the way I want it has always been the Pronto.
Unfortunately that's not totally unbreakable (although mine _has_ never
broke) -which it needs to be around young kids, so I can't use it in the
living room. Otherwise I'd have 2 Prontos and no other remotes in the house.

The Marantz gets my vote for 2nd place. It's top-heavy and ugly compared to
the Harmonys, but it is less fiddly.

The Harmony 885 has some features over the 665, but I'd rate the 665 above
the other one -the shape is nicer and the buttons more 'defined' without
looking where you're pressing.
I don't think they do the 665 anymore, but last I heard they were to be
found in bargain bins for around 20 quid -a real bargain if one can be
found.

But anyway -65 for a Pronto is a steal too. They're a bit tatty-looking
nowadays, but do an excellent trouble-free job if you're willing to make an
effort in "designing" your screens for it.
If not -go for a Harmony... but beware... it's often easier to reach for a
device's "real" remote instead of wasting time selecting buttons on the
Harmony... kinda defeats the purpose in my view.
