I fail to see how someone who has been made so rich by these movies
failed to keep original versions. Lucas MUST have uncomposited,
un-digital-effectized elements from when he assembled the
not-so-special editions. All he'd have to do is assemble them according
to the original shooting script...time-consuming and expensive.
Why is it that the general consensus in the nation is that newer is
better? Newer is NOT better. If GL were really respectful of the legacy
that he has created with these three films...films that changed the
lives of many people...films that pushed the envelope and changed the
course of the way movies are shot...if GL were really respectful of
this, he'd find a way to recreate the original films.
Instead, we've got a situation similar to METROPOLIS. A highly
respected and sought-after film of which the original version no longer
exists. Do we have to wait 75 years for Kino to reassemble it?
On a side note, I had listened to a podcast (put out by people in the
industry) a few months back that talked about how GL's divorce
settlement guaranteed his ex-wife a portion of the profits everytime
the original trilogy is released. So, greed took over and he tinkered
until they were changed enough from what she had edited to pass as new
versions and cut out any pay-out to her. True or not...it's one
explanation.
