Well, it's happened again. Dozens of Star Wars posts have infested this DVD
newsgroup and there is no end in sight. The posts are about how George Lucas
has bastardized -- and continues to bastardize -- the first three Star Wars
movies.

If we are to believe Mr. Lucas, he has also destroyed all of the original
negatives, thus making it impossible to ever restore the original scenes.
Now, George wants to release the original, unadulterated Star Wars
trilogy in a non-anamorphic, widescreen DVD format which will be created
from the 1993 LaserDisc masters.

But this isn't the first time that George Lucas has changed one of his
movies and made the original version disappear. Remember "American
Graffiti?"

"Oh, that crafty George Lucas! Not content to tweak only his big-budget
Star Wars extravaganzas with newfangled CGI effects, Lucas would again
wave his magic light pen over American Graffiti, a film you wouldn't
readily expect would benefit from such modern effects trickery."

"Since American Graffiti would seem to need little improvement, what did
Lucas change? Pay close attention to the very first shot in the film.
Anything look new and improved on the DVD? Notice the sunset behind the
diner. In the original theatrical release and all subsequent home video
versions prior to the DVD, the sunset was murky and dark. Now, it is
much more picturesque, complete with delicate shadings and better color.
The rest of the film remains unchanged. Just for comparison's sake, you
can find the original shot on the documentary included on the DVD."

"But that's not all Lucas changed. Back in 1978, Lucas made some minor
changes to the film. The original 1973 theatrical release cut ran 110
minutes, but with three minor additions, now runs 112 minutes. All video
versions feature this 112 minute cut. The additions include:"

"1. Chapter 9 starting at 0:51, Toad pulls in to 'Jerry's Cherries'
used car lot."

"2. Chapter 18 starting at 4:10, Steve and Laurie are kicked out of
the dance by Mr. Kroot."

"3. Chapter 38 starting at 1:07, Bob Falfa sings 'Some Enchanted
Evening' to Laurie."

By the way, George Lucas has such a stranglehold on his Star Wars empire
that Carrie Fisher has to send George a royalty check every time she looks
at herself in a mirror.

May the farce be with you.
