A low q mp3 will have a higher bitrate, will be larger and so will take
more decoding for a given track duration. The actual decoding for VBR is
no more intensive than for CBR.
Why not do a test to compare how long the battery lasts when playing mp3s
of 128 kbps or 256 kbps?
