I'm running Avid Xpress Pro HD successfully on a Dell Latitude C840 laptop
with a mobile 2.4 gig processor, 1 Mb of RAM and a 64 Mb graphics card. One
piece of advice, if possible, is to mount a second internal HDD (if the Dell
has a modular bay), although you can run it OK if you partition the drive
and save your media files on the second partition.

At work we are using Newscutter XP on a similar machine with only 256K RAM
and a 2 gig processor, and it works fine.

A word of caution, however. I'm only editing SD. If you're planning on
editing that HDV mpeg2 stuff you'll need a lot more firepower. As I read the
specs for Premiere that seems to be the same case there.

One caveat: When I first loaded the Avid, I was getting exception errors and
it wouldn't run at all. It turned out that my graphics driver needed
updating. I'm not savvy enough to know whether there might be
incompatibilities that would cause you trouble even if you are completely up
to spec. You might want to post your question to the Avid community forum.
