I`ll answer this one (I often wear braces) :-}

I`m a fat f*cker (over 17 stone), and therefore the bulge of my gut is
bigger than my waist, such that trousers fall down unless you get a pair
large enough to pull all the way up to your tits.

Braces simply keep my trousers in a not-unmodest position approximately
where they should be, rather than around my ankles.
