So you admit is *was* a competitor to DVD.

Included in the DIVX spec were so-called "Gold Discs" that would play an
unlimited amount of times for the purchase price. In other words, a direct
competition with retail DVDs. The DIVX format died out before any such
discs hit the market, but the potential was there.
