Try and fit an 120MM CD player in my front pocket will you, and take the
time to burn, heck even switch CDs.
My HDD based player (lets pretend it is not an iPod), fits in my pocket
nicely, has nearly all the music I have yet encoded, plus my music
videos, radio shows, and podcasts, plus loads nearly instantly.
A flash player also loads nearly instantly, can carry as much or more
than a CDR, is physically more reliable even than an HDD based player,
and costs about the same as a CD based player.
The only way the iPod really excels is in branding, and to a lesser
degree, user experience.
