So, not a consumer device then. I'm sorry, I should've been clearer. PC
parts needing upgrades don't really count when comparing them to Toshiba's
standalone HD DVD players.

Again, those upgrades added functionality that wasn't originally promised
with your purchase of the device, which is different than with the
Toshibas, which needed a firmware upgrade in order to play what it was
*originally* supposed to.
