i have to say, and it's been repeated often enough in any one of
numerous ng's, that recording in lp mode is a known risk. i have never
done so since my pro cameras never gave me the option (though i did once
try a beta tape in my 300, and was suprised that not only did it record,
but pretty well at that - but it was only a test - however, anything
paid for isn't worth the risk).
but, i have had clients who've brought in tapes recorded (on a variety
of cameras) in lp mode only to be confronted with any one of a list of
'known' problems; from audio drop outs, to picture glitches, to totally
unplayable in anything but the original camera the material was recorded
on - and on one unfortuanate occassion, it wouldn't even play back
properly in that!
rather than stretch out this thread even longer - i would suggest that
you (gary), record anything serious in sp mode, and leave lp for home
movies and the like..... it's not going to make an iota's worth of
difference complaining to sony, jvc, etc., since even they don't
recommend lp mode for universal playback capability...
