You could try buying a "service contract", but on unknown used
merchandise, good luck.

People sometimes arrange for "escrow" from a trusted 3rd party
where the equipment can be sent to a mutually-agreed service
place to make an independent assessment of the goods.

eBay/PayPal use the Feedback mechanism as an ingenious
nearly-passive method of tracking seller and buyer satisfaction.
