It has been a long time since we had any 456 camcorders so I would
really have to do some research to find the exact specifications to
make a direct comparison.

Other than just recording to digital tape, digital offers vastly
superior video and audio. The camcorder section is vastly superior
with a much newer generation CCD that has a higher pixel density. I
don't know the exact specs. The error correction and image
stabilization are much better, you have an LCD side-mount viewfinder,
firewire out and a number of other features. It will give you a better
picture out overall including low light. It's much lighter-weight of
course.

If you're doing any editing you will get a better result going to tape
than DVD. There are a number of other things I haven't mentioned but
you get the idea. Still, I would suggest renting a unit if you can and
shooting like scenes and comparing them side-by-side. That will help
you decide better than any rundown of features.

Alternatively you might look at what you can find in a good used 3-chip
model.
