It was ment for recorder/players not for just players (i mean the
harware, not you ;-)

VR mode should work on recent Sony camcorders/recorders, but not on most
players.
VR mode is for editing, DIY.

My guess is that the internal format is simplfied, less compressed form
that is easy to edit so that sound and video stay synchronized.
