Just to follow up, I did try installing Nero - it took a long time,
and I got error messages after opening it to use it, but it did
successfully burn a data disk (I think - haven't tested it yet). My
only regret is that I didn't create a Restore Point before installing.
I also installed PowerDVD also OEM bundled with an old optical drive,
so I guess I have some alternatives for trying to watch DVDs. (Media
Player Classic, also.) Oh, and I didn't install the Nero Packet
Writer.
