I have a sony trv900 camcorder. What is a good way to stablize it while
walking/running with it?

I need to be able to pan, so a steady cam jr may not work. Somehow I have
the impression you cannot pan with it.

There are gun-type thing that allows you to brace one end on the shoulder.
Do those help, compared to just holding the camcorder with a strap?
