MTBF for hard disks is a total joke. I love how manufacturers specify a
10-year MTBF for a product which has been on the market for a month.
Now that DLT drives are available cheaply on Ebay, there's no reason
not to have good backups. Actually, it's pretty impressive how
far backup technology has come in the past few years. The current
LTO-3 format that we are using at work now is so much better that
it can't even be compared to the crappy 4mm systems that were common
just five years ago.
