Make that two tacked-on endings - (spoilers ahead)
Where the play ended at the hospital with the girl surviving, the movie
has her heading out to the dock on a stormy night to retrieve her pin -
and getting blowed up by lightning. Yes, God Himself steps in!

While I can understand peoples' feelings on all sides of the 'PC'
issue, I can't help recalling someone's statement at work:
My company was commissioned to put together an exhibit at an air museum
in Georgia showing the prehistory of the immediate area, based on the
local archaeological finds. At a client meeting with museum personnel
we outlined the plan, showing the development of native society and
technology, ending the exhibit at the time Europeans showed up. The
museum rep (an elderly woman who seems to have attained her position by
simply being around long enough) chirped up "Oh, and this is where
*people* come in!" In the silence afterward, as everyone's jaw hung
open, her assistant tactfully told her "We consider the original
natives to actually be people." She puffed up and snorted "Well, I'm
sorry if I'm not poLITically corRECT!" as if being so trumped everyone
else.
Anyway, whenever I hear someone loudly patting themselves on the back
for their mindset, I associate them with this dimwiddy, even though it
may not be politically...you know.
