Anamorphic or"widescreen" DVD's are not letterboxed.
Letterbox and Pan and Scan are two methods of converting a widescreen
picture to show on a screen of different dimensions.
If you play a widescreen DVD on your 4x3 TV the player does the
letterbox conversion for you.
Don't believe it. Just try playing a DVD that is specifically in
letterboxed format on a widescreen TV. You magically get a tiny picture
with black bars on all four sides. The 4x3 letterboxed image is placed
in the middle with black bars on either side.
Pan and Scan is still done and sold as "Full Screen." The other option
is now "Widescreen." Read a package in a store once a decade and try to
keep up.
As a premade format, letterbox is old and tired and so are you.
