Movie Review - Fried Green Tomatoes: Anniversary Edition / Expanded Version
By Tracy M. Rogers
Fifteen years after its theatrical release, director Jon Avnet and
Universal Studios have reissued the cinematic adaptation of Fanny
Flagg's Fried Green Tomatoes. Revolving around relationships between two
sets of female friends -- one contemporary and the other from the 1930s
-- the film features stellar performances by Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart
Masterson, Mary Louise Parker, and the late Jessica Tandy. A murder
mystery, premature deaths, and race relations dominate the old-time
storyline, while marital woes and a blossoming friendship are at the
forefront of the present-day scenario. Among the extras augmenting the
anniversary edition of Fried Green Tomatoes are a paltry collection of
deleted scenes, some very humorous outtakes, an insightful documentary
on the making of the movie, director Jon Avnet's notes as well as his
feature-length commentary, and numerous production photographs and posters.
