While I'm not nearly as technically versed as many in here, one thing I've
found re: DVD players both the standalone and Computer-based burner/players
& DVD player software is that they're far more finicky than VCR's. VCR's
will pretty much play any tape you put in them. Not quite so in the DVD
world. One DVD will play fine, another won't. While it's less often the case
with commercially made (i.e. stamped, not burned) DVD's, I've had issues
with them too.
Burners have gotten pretty inexpensive - try getting a second burner with
different software and see if you get different behavior. I find that one of
my burners won't accept certain burnables that the other one has no problem
with and vice-versa. With 2 burners you can also then make direct to drive
copies.
