I use a 'Boostroo' (or whatever its called) in the car with my Archos X202s
it has improved things (I no longer need to maximise the car stereo and
Archos volume) but more like the lower end of 40 - 100% - still worth it
though and affordable (I looked at headphone amps and these were out of my
price range.
Regarding MP3 gain I always peg mine at 92.5 dB to avoid clipping.
