I see no one has directly answered your question

The reason is simple, You are thinking like a computer user, RePlay
(And TiVo) are aimed at TELEVISION users, and the resolution they use
is standard Never Twice Same Color (ok, Ok, NTSC really means National
Television Standards Comittee) video, or 1/2 of it

That is, it is optimized for a standard television, which is what it is
designed for NOT for a computer, which, thankfully and thanks to Gerry
it works with rather nicely, but the design of for televison
