It's probably more a case of poor disc manufacture, more intricate menu
structures (animations, extras etc...) and a player getting a bit old in the
tooth. Try copying a problem disc via DVDshrink, or a similar program, and
see if it then play correctly, that'll be a clue whether it's more likely to
be the player and/or disc.
