How did you hook it up?  With a component cable?  Make sure it is  
connected correctly. 
 
It's also possible the player is PAL and the set is NTSC.  If the set or  
player can be configured to deal with this, try to do so. 
 
BTW, if the DVD player will only play DVDs from Europe (Region 2), then  
it won't play them from U.S./Canada (Region 1).  See:
