Maybe this will sum it up ....

Digicipher : Big dish, subscription to get "free"
channels (or a "hit" from a service). The service (like NPS) "hits"
our receivers with a signal to allow us to get what we pay for. The
"free" listings come with most every subscription, so its not like
you'd know they were free on this system. BUT they only decode
what they believe will make them a profit to carry -- that's why you
still can't get everything you see (read in DirecTV below about this)

DSS: DirecTV. Again, you can get the free
signals IF you have their equipment and a current card in the
receiver. (Notice, some signals DirecTV uses come from digicipher
sources -- they are for them and them alone -- which may be why
services like NPS don't offer them).

DVB: Dish Network. Same as DSS for the most.
You'll always see their logo by the channel info so it shouldn't
confuse you to think its part of the Free-To-Air hobby.

DVB: The rest of what you read on Lyngsat, anything from bar
sports packages to private systems use DVB to send their
programs out. If its encrypted, you might have a long road ahead
of you to try and get it -- if the "owner" will let you buy their
system and subscribe -- some are only for the Armed Forces.
With mpeg/dvb consumer receivers, like your Fortec, Free-to-air
signals are the only ones you're concerned with. (DVB-FTA)
And being FTA, these listings may not be accurate day-to-day.
Actually best to use the "blind search" feature to keep up with
what's new. And then cross check with Lyngsat or SatcoDX sites
to make sure you're not missing something. And if you don't get
a channel when you have a strong signal .... its probably just gone
encrypted. BUT -- there are a few that you have to enter BY HAND
(manually enter the information you see on Lyngsat)
to receive. So try all methods if you think its there, the sites say
its there, and yet your receiver won't pick it up.
