Not true. Those that didn't buy laser disc already saw one advantage
of DVD. Form factor. A twelve inch disc that has to be turned during
the movie is undesirable compared to a 5.25 inch disc that plays from
start to finish without a pause.
So, for a laser disc owner like myself as well as a non owner aware
of the quality difference over VHS, it was a no brainer. Even if said
non owner wasn't into LD. The reason for that, back then, was
typically the price of the player, and the fact that VHS could record
from cable to a suitable degree of clarity for most of those people.
Notice that now that DVD has recordable mediums in the channel, DVD
itself has gained popularity even further than it originally had. The
advancement of the PC industry has also played a hand. Back in the
eighties, there was no connection between the two. Now, both home
entertainment and the PC have links to each other. It is a different
world.
