That's not true. BSG was a production for the Sci Fi Channel. Always
has been. They were the ones that picked up the series for a 13-episode
first season long before anyone else, Sky One included, signed on. They
didn't grab onto the series only after Sky One "took the bullet".
While their contracts for their original shows give them some amount of
rights to air them before anyone else, there are limitations to those
rights when they start to infringe on foreign networks' rights. For
whatever bizarre reasons, they did not want to debut the first season
until January 2005. Sky One wanted to start airing it earlier than
that, and so they did.
The same thing happened with FARSCAPE years back. Sci Fi had some funky
scheduling, and so didn't contest it when the BBC started airing episodes
before Sci Fi did.

Actually, while I have no evidence that such is the case, I'm inclined
to believe that the October start date is because they've come to a
scheduling agreement with Sky One so neither will be ahead of the other.
One supporting argument for this is the unconfirmed info that Sci Fi
will *not* be taking a long break halfway through the season, but will
take a short break over the Christmas/New Year holidays (and probably
Sky One as well), and start up again when the two Stargates come back
from their fall hiatus in January. By delaying the start of the season
to October, they preclude any "advance" UK airings for the second half
of the season.
