I'm looking for an inexpensive 4-track simutaneous recorder with 4 phantom
powered XLR mic inputs. This can be a usb/firewire front end for a laptop,
or an independent memory card or hard disk based recorder. I already have a
laptop and a mixer with 2 XLR inputs.

So far, the best deal I found is fostex mr-8 hd: 4 xlr inputs, phantom
powered, hard disk based recorder. Sells for $400.

Could someone suggest a better deal? A combination of devices is ok.

This is used for video audio, I don't worry too much about S/N ratio, as
long as it is better than a PC's audio card. No need to have guitar or midi
capabilities.
