That's only half the problem - they'll never be able to crack the
piracy problem as long as there's a free alternative, and P2P is simply
too attractive to ignore no matter how well the "sales model" suits
current technology

The VCR argument, or for that matter, the recording-music-off-the-radio
argument - both of them miss the point when it comes to music
downloading. When you tape media off TV or the radio, it's typically
an end-user thing. Each individual recording remains exactly that -
the end-recording. The tape may get passed around, but how many people
will copy from it? Most internet downloading comes from individuals
using file-sharing systems. Each download becomes a potential and
likely source for somebody else's download. Instead of cluttering up
the TV cabinet, the recording is now actively passed around as currency
for future downloads by those users.
