A few months back, I was complaining in this group about the occasional
loss of video-to-audio synchronization in digital formats, such as DV.
A few people out here said I was nuts.
I opined that there must be a way to subcode a sync signal in both the
video and audio, and that a unit could be designed to look for sync
errors and correct them based on this.
In the July Television Broadcast magazine, there are two squibs about
such a system from Sigma, called Arbalest (pages 8 and 30).
"The Arbalest system provides flawless recovery from lip-sync errors
created by multiple video and audio transmission paths. It
automatically detects and compensates for any dleay in a transmission
up to +/- 5 seconds...The process is totally transparent to viewers,
and uses a patent-pending system that accurately identifies the time
relationship between video and audio signals."
The articles note that both TNT and Court TV have ordered Arbalest
systems.
I wuz right!
