If only that were true! One of the favorites myths in America is that
conservatives prefer independent, pull yourself up by your bootstraps,
rugged individualism, while liberals prefer redistribution and equality.
The truth is, conservatives take their government hand-outs in the
form of military defense contracts, broadcast bandwidth, tax breaks
(like the one Exxon recently obtained for oil rights in the Gulf),
deregulation (why the hell should the gun industry be immune to
liability lawsuits for defective products, like every other
company...)... or, in some cases, like the Savings and Loan scandal, in
direct cash hand-outs, thank you. Suddenly, that $250 a month welfare
mother sounds like a bargain, and at least she's not socking her wealth
away overseas.
