Not quite true. I often use firewire connected D-8 units as a tape
backup of the main cam. (on longer events I will use a full size
DV/DVCam backup deck) The D-8 format is very rugged and dependable and
its dropout rate is below the same material recorded on DV or DVCam.
8mm mechanisms have been refined over the years. It is curious how 8mm
was a very dropout prone format but D-8 is extremely trouble free.
Tape is cheap and I reuse D-8 tape over and over without any problems.
The cameras generally suck as cameras, but as just a recorder they are
very good and quite cheap. I just bought a Sony demo D-8 unit from
Target for $48.00, as a deck it is great.
