I've gone back to the handbook (P87) -- always a useful thing to do at
6-monthly intervals to see what you've forgotten/never learned!

When in normal 'camera recording' mode, the PD150 records to Ch1&2 in
both 48K and 32K modes. In 48K then that's that -- you can't do
anything else. In 32K you have the opportunity to record additional
material (a voiceover?) to Ch3&4 with Audio Dub. You still input to
the Ch1&2 sockets, but when Audio Dub is selected (on the top panel
under the handle) it records to 3&4 and leaves the picture and 1&2
untouched. You can monitor the balance of the two audio streams in the
headphones with the Audio Mix option in the VCR menu.

So the fact that you saw the Ch1 meter moving in the viewfinder is
correct -- when filming, any audio would certainly (faults apart) be
going to Ch1&2. My 'off-the-top-of-my-head' thought was that perhaps
your separate player was outputting only Ch3&4 for some reason, and so
trying to play a stream that hadn't been recorded. Was I right,
perchance?

Incidentally, I see that the handbook claims that the audio dub to
Ch3&4 can only be done when recording to DVCam standard, not DV. I
guess not enough bandwidth at the slower tape speed.
