To back up Veggie Dave's response, check the highlighting options in
the upper right hand portion of your window. I've had the same issue
before using the underline option, where the highlight is set the same
color as the background.

And, because I messed up a bunch of DVD's when I first started, I can't
stress enough the use of the "Preview" option (if you're not already
using it).
