Actually, according to the laws of electronics, they lasted a *very*
long time.
I had my LD player 18 years before it quit working, and have another
that still works fine. The only thing wrong with the first one are
the electrolytic caps in it... dried out. Were it not for DVD, it
would still be around and we would be talking about increased data
capacity on that form factor as opposed to the 5.25" DVD / CD form
factor. CAV ruled! My NASA discs are irreplaceable.
