Being given the choice of buying a DVD you don't want is like offering
hungry people the chance to buy a turd sandwich.

Lucas knows that people want good-quality DVDs of the original 'Star
Wars' movies without all the crap he added to them, so instead he
offers them a crappy 4:3 letterboxed transfer that was used for the
laserdisk. Then when few people buy it he'll say 'aha, they said they
wanted to buy the original version of the movies, but when we offered
it to them they didn't buy it, so there's no reason to ever release
them again.'
